I&#039;ll reiterate what I&#039;ve been preaching for several years now:&lt;br /&gt;

Don&#039;t fly without an AFR meter installed&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Don&#039;t exceed 26 degrees total timing on mogas at full power&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Don&#039;t fly unless you&#039;ve properly set the Magnet Position parameter using a timing gun&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Don&#039;t run anything less than 91 octane fuel&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Don&#039;t run leaner than 11.5 AFR at full power with the factory cast pistons (11.0 to 1 is better). The EZ36 engines seem even more sensitive to AFR than the EZ30 and EJ25 engines.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Were seeing pretty consistent failures within 10-80 hours when people ignore these recommendations&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
I&#039;m not exaggerating when I say, I&#039;ve heard of dozens of similar failures now on all types of automotive conversions now, especially Subaru (one lasted 22 seconds). You can&#039;t expect factory car reliability levels unless you run similar timing and AFRs as the factory does with their ECU setups. The cast pistons in most engines are very marginal at sustained full power unless you run very rich. Add in higher coolant and oil temps than the car installation sees and the thermal margins for the pistons become even slimmer.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

From our research lately, we&#039;ve discovered some information about these motors that we would like to share.  There has been quite a lot of questions about what Service Manual to use on these engines.  H6, E6 (Eggenfellner&#039;s tag name), EZ30D and EZ30D-R are synonymous for the same general motor: A 3.0 Liter, horizontally opposed, Dual Overhead Cam, 6 cylinder Subaru engine.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
This wiki has some minor errors, that we will try to clear up.  If you scroll to the section of this wiki that lists the 6 cylinder motors, you will note that there are two listings for EZ30D.  Both of these are DOHC, but the first one listed has slightly less horsepower, and is listed *incorrectly* as found in 2000-2002 models.  It&#039;s actually found in models through 2004.  This 6 cylinder engine is very easy to identify because it has only a single exhaust port per head.  This engine is what is referred to as Eggenfellner&#039;s early H6.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The second EZ30D was introduced with changes to the valve assemblies with features such as Variable Valve Lift (VVL) and Active Valve Control System (AVCS).  This engine has a higher horsepower rating than the early EZ30D.  This variation of the EZ30D sometimes is found by the names of: EZ30R, EZ30D-R and models of vehicles with this engine were listed with 3.0R.  The wiki also mistakenly lists the engine as found in 2003 and 2006 and later models.  Our research shows that it&#039;s actually found in 2005 and later models.  This engine is also very easy to identify because it has a single exhaust port per cylinder.  This engine is what is referred to as Eggenfellner&#039;s later H6 - about the time Jan started calling them the E6. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
So, when hunting down Service Manuals for these motors, the early EZ30D can be found in the 2000-2004 Outback with the 3.0 Liter 6 cylinder engine.  The later EZ30D Service Manual can be found in the 2005 and later Outback with the 3.0R 6 cylinder engine.  As far as we can tell, as long as you get a Service manual in any of these two *broad* year ranges, it should be perfect for the motor you have.  The key is to determine if you have a single exhaust pipe on each head, or 3 pipes into one on each head.&lt;br /&gt;

* Buy an automotive style compression tester from an auto parts store.&lt;br /&gt;
* Run the engine for a minute or two so it is slightly warm and has oil throughout&lt;br /&gt;
* Remove all 6 wires from the coils (Be gentle with the locking clips)&lt;br /&gt;
* Remove all six coils by loosening bolts until coil pulls off the spark plug&lt;br /&gt;
* Remove spark plugs with 5/8 sparkplug socket.  Hold tool straight to prevent braking the plug&lt;br /&gt;
* Screw compression tester into one cylinder until seated against the O-ring on tester&lt;br /&gt;
* Open the throttle fully&lt;br /&gt;
* Stay clear of the propeller and tie the airplane down&lt;br /&gt;
* Provide power to the starter switch but leave the ignition off. &lt;br /&gt;
* Press the start switch and watch the needle on the compression tool.  It will stabilize after a few seconds of cranking and not increase any more.  &lt;br /&gt;
* Write down this reading.  It will be somewhere between 180 and 230 psi.&lt;br /&gt;
* Repeat the test on the rest of the cylinders (Be sure to reset the tool by pressing the button and release previous pressure)&lt;br /&gt;
* Below 180 - clean engine with marvel mystery oil in the gas / use auto fuel only for a while&lt;br /&gt;
* 180 to 190 is good&lt;br /&gt;
* 190 to 210 is great&lt;br /&gt;
* 210 to 230 can&#039;t get better and be sure to use good quality fuel&lt;br /&gt;
* Reinstall spark plugs with a small amount of anti seize on the second and third thread of the plug (stay away from the electrode)&lt;br /&gt;
* Tighten new plugs until the built-in crush washer is compressed.  You can feel it compressing.&lt;br /&gt;
* Tighten older plugs (washer already compressed, until snug against the block, then 1/8 turn)&lt;br /&gt;
* Reinstall coils&lt;br /&gt;
* Reinstall coil wires&lt;br /&gt;
* Close the throttle&lt;br /&gt;
